A Dispatch
concerning the moving picture of 1776
To all who receive this:
The musical 1776 was taken down upon a common DVD, in the ordinary way, and it looked as such things do — rough. I undertook to mend it. Two thousand lines of picture proved more than the original would bear; forcing the matter would have looked strange. I therefore settled upon full 1080.
Four copies attend this letter:
- 480i — the original interlaced capture
- 480p — deinterlaced
- 854×480p — rebuilt from what was actually in the 1s and 0s
- 1080p — upscaled with a generative model
I think that last one turned out really nice. A word of caution, all the same:
Generative upscaling can get things wrong. Anything that looks off in the full restore is a spot where the source had almost nothing to work with. Keep in mind that I am just some guy with a laptop.
Everyone who was part of this was awesome, and I hope you like what I did with it. I really, really, really had a great time.
Also: I am pretty sure that filming this to begin with is illegal, let alone sharing it online. In the spirit of not getting anybody in any trouble, make smart choices. I am happy you are here :)
